Rajkan

A Speck of Dust

I lie back on a charpai and watch in awe the infinite sky above Bhuj, in the western part of India. White sand surrounds me. A rajkan rides the wind - a tiny speck of dust, and yet a star among stars. Just like we are so small against the vastness of the universe, yet we are the universe.

As the day comes to an end, the oldest women of the village finish their chores and begin to work with patient fingers through an embroidery unique to their community. They call it Katab, a traditional hand-appliqué craft once practiced for household textiles.

The younger generation is no longer inclined to take it up, and it pains us to realize that something so exquisite could soon fade away.

As an ode to the multitude of crafts that thrive in our villages, and with a sentiment to prevent this rare beauty from  disappearing, we bring to you Rajkan, created in collaboration with over 70 rural women artisans.
